Hana Baby Wrap Instructions
(Hint: Ensure that the ‘X’ is snug against your back and chest – the heavier the child, the tighter and / or higher the X-tie)
Hold the wrap in front of you and wrap it underneath you armpits flat around your chest and tummy.
Move the ends behind your back and crisscross them. Try not to twist the ends.
Bring the ends over your shoulders to your front. You now have an ‘X’ on your back. Stretch the fabric, so the ‘X’ is snug on your back and shoulders and the logo panel is clinging to your body.
Open up the logo panel and thread both ends through it.
Pull ends down and adjust the logo panel so it is snug and against your chest, and crisscross the ends again to form an ‘X’ on your chest. Keep the fabric stretched while doing this, so the ‘X’ is snug against your chest.
Move the ends behind your back and tie a double knot
Or keep wrapping and tie a double knot at your front.
2. Newborn hold – from birth till approx. 2.5 months
Start with the X-tie. Ensure that the ‘X’ is clinging to your body and locate the
X-strap closest to your chest.
Place your baby on your chest, positioning the legs in the foetal tuck.
Open up the X-strap closest to your body and pull it over your baby, covering your baby’s legs, bottom, back and shoulder.
Open up the other X-strap.
Slide the fabric over your baby’s legs, bottom, back and other shoulder.
Pull the front panel with logo all the way up to cover baby’s bottom, legs, body and shoulders.
To support baby’s head you can tuck it underneath one X-strap, and turn the face towards the other strap to ensure free airflow around baby’s nose and mouth. Ensure that your baby’s nose is at the very least kept level with the floor. If baby is sleeping, tilt the head gently backwards so the nose is pointed diagonally upward.
3. Hug Hold – from birth
Start with the X-tie. Open up the X-strap closest to your chest and pull it over your baby’s leg and arm. Spread out the fabric evenly, from one knee pit to the other and cover baby’s bottom, thighs, back and shoulder.
Open up the other X-strap and do the same. Ensure that baby is fully supported at the bottom, back and shoulders and that there is a secure fit around baby’s thighs.
Locate the front panel with logo and slide baby’s legs through it.
Pull the front panel up over your baby’s body, covering baby’s legs, bottom, back and shoulders.
If your baby does not have head control or is asleep, you can tuck baby’s head comfortably underneath one X-strap, and turn the face towards the other strap to ensure free airflow around baby’s nose and mouth. Ensure that your baby’s nose is at the very least kept level with the floor. If baby is sleeping, tilt the head slightly backwards so the nose is pointed upward at an angle.
T.I.C.K.S. sling safety guidelines
Your wrap should be tight enough to hug your baby close to you as this will be most comfortable for you both. Any slack/loose fabric will allow your baby to slump down in the carrier which can hinder their breathing and pull on your back.
In view at all times.
You should always be able to see your baby’s face by simply glancing down – make sure there is no fabric covering your child’s face.
Close enough to kiss
Your baby’s head should be as close to your chin as is comfortable. By tipping your head forward you should be able to kiss your baby on the head or forehead.
Keep chin off the chest.
Your baby should never be curled so their chin is forced onto their chest as this can restrict their breathing. Check you can get a finger under their chin (reach in from the side of the sling if you need to).
The wrap should support your baby’s back – and his tummy and chest should be against you. If you put your hand on your baby’s back and press gently s/he should not uncurl.
